The first time Christophe Colomb arrived here Indigeneous came to meet him. He celebrated his arrival with welcoming dances. They didn't understood and threw darts at him and finally started a battle. Us when we arrived, we didn't have return tickets cause a guy from the airline told us we didn't have to buy them, so they talked to us like shit and made us (and Ben) wait 2 hours...Just arrived and we could already feel the colonialist and slavery past that their ancestors had been victims (we were pray of racism). We are at Ben and Mapi's, we met them in Hull (UK), they work at the University of west Indies. They showed us the island Trinidad. We came and left with the rain, remembering us of Hull...Tropical rain is alright as the temperature is between 28 and 35ºC. Quite quickly we took the caribbean rythm: waking up late, taking decision slowly, undecision due to the way the country is badly organised and maximum protection against moquitos and sun. We saw beautiful beaches, busy market, indu temples (40% of the population is hindu), as well as snakes and tropical birds. Finally we can't talk about Trinidad without mentionning the steel pan, a musical instrument made of baril. The petrol industry is also quite important and the traffic jams due to too many cars and maxi taxis are part of the trini life. Rastafaris with mountain of dreadlocks are everywhere. Insecurity and kidnappings are feared and part of everyday life. One of our regret is that we won't see the carnival which is in may.

After a month spent in Ecuador, it was time to go and see other places. The trip from Ecuador to Venezuela was not easy at all: in one day, we had to use at least two aircraft (at least one was a jet, and I have to say relatively recent), take off and land at least 3 times (My face went respectively white, green and blue), pay 5 different kinds of airport, national or leaving taxes, and were forced to eat the on-board food (That didn’t help about the colour of my face)) Caracas airport was messy enough to forget it and was quickly skipped. We finally arrived in Isla Margherita where we had arranged a meeting at the airport with the mum of a friend of a friend... Isla margherita is located in the north of Venezuela, which is to say on the border of the Caribbean Sea. We were led to a former military hostel which was, strangely enough, still full of uniforms and guns……..Fortunately, an air conditioned system, a swimming pool, two ancient Spanish forts at walking distance and the sea and the beach with coco trees just below our window were determinant to convince us to accommodate with this charming community. We did enjoy very much all of that but; yet, found a urge to go on for something else quite quickly….

El Tambo

Our volunteer story with Ecotrackers network
Av. Our first stay was in Estero de Platano on the Pacific coast, and we decided to opt for some more serious things: The Andes and the altitude sickness, and a total immersion into the Cañari culture. It was without any difficulty that we reached this place, as it is conveniently located on the Panamericana road. We were welcomed by Jose and Isaura and their son Freddy in their nice brightly red-coloured house. They were very happy to tell us a big chunk of the History of their culture: an amazing mix of civilizations, wars, beliefs and sciences. I spent the next night dreaming about some Cañari princess, Inca´s road to the sun and some Conquistadors´ quest to some treasure. I have to say that I did probably mix everything up; such was the profusion of innumerable details that they gave us.
The place is really full of History as it was possible to enjoy, during our short stay, the ruins of Ingapirca, the Inca´s trail and Los Baños del Inca, which are located in a short distance from El Tambo. Also, our attention was drawn on the fact that the ruins of “Los baños del Inca” are actually abandoned and not developed at all. This site is waiting for an entrance office and a small museum. It has great potential for tourism and could be an ideal complementary alternative to Ingarpica and the Inca´s trail.
As volunteers, our small retribution was to go and help in the nursery school of the community: La guarderia de Cucho Corral, which is always in need of fresh blood, as they are only 3 persons in charge of usually 25 to 30 niños. In there, a dozen of kids, between 1 and 5 years old, were impatiently waiting for some lost souls to play with them: Piezas, little coches and pellotas were our duty.
It was a very nice opportunity to spend time within the community, discovering the great heritage inherited after centuries of History, learning a bit of Spanish and also Quichua, and having a better understanding of the importance and signification of these cultures.

The photo shows the Ingapirca ruins, remains of 2 civilisations, the cañaris and the incas. The cañaris are from Ecuador and were the first . In the 15th century, the incas came from Peru to colonise the cañaris, but this people were strong and the incas never got rid of them...Finally they lived and got married together in peace, until the spanish invasion. The people that we met there said they feel as being cañaris but in reality they are issued of the 2 civilisations blend.

Infos: soon to come...

On the photo below, Laurent and Isaura, who opened her house to us for 5 days.

Lost in the mountain...

We got lost in the mountain and spent the night in a shed somewhere...we went to Achupallas, a very little village in the Sierra, our aim was to look for a guide to do the inca´s trail during 2 days with horses, our french guide book was talking about Manuel...what it didn't tell us is that this guide lives 3 hours far from Achupallas. We arrived at around 2 in the afternoon and went to look for him walking in the mountain...after 1h30 of walk, we couldn't see further than 5 meters and nobody around, not even a donkey! My bagpack was weighing a lot, like if someone put stones in it...we couldn't see the path (that we were trying to follow), just hearing some dogs far away...But how far? The question was what to do?The night was coming...we found a little shed in a field, the walls were made of soil and the roof of dried herbs, it was our heaven for the night, we managed to find little peace of wood, just in case it was freezing and we needed to do a fire (finally there was no need for it). I was very glad my friends from Reva offered me a mountain sleeping bag as my leaving present. Being really tired of walking and having just a banana for two to eat, we managed to fall asleep until the next morning...The next morning we walked to the village to get something to eat, we walked 2 hours starving but the day was clear and the sightseeing amazing! We gave up with the guide and decided to head for our next volunteering destination in El Tambo (near Ingapirca). After the breakfast, we had to walk (again) for few more hours to join the Panamericana to get a bus. The sun was striking and there was no shade, no cars...

I can tell you that after these 2 days of adventure, my calves were aching for at least 3 days...BUT HOW GOOD IT WAS!

Le train de la mort

Riobamba-Alausi (10-12 oct 05)
People had to evacuate the city in 1999 because of its bad temper.....We were expecting an imminent irruption while we were there, but nothing happened...just Manuela baddreamed about it one night!

Not very easy to reach this place, situated near Atacames on the Pacific coast of Ecuador. We had to travel all night from Quito, waiting for few hours in the middle of the night in a place that seems to come from another world and reached Estero de Platano on the roof of a "ranchera" (that is to say being in god´s hands for at least a couple of hours). Finally, we were welcomed by Fermin and his family: 5 girls and a little boy aged from 1 to 11 years. Their house is ideally situated on the beach between the river (called "Estero de Platano") and the jungle. They gave us an amazing amount of bananas and rice to eat at each meals, but also seafoods, fish, chicken and any kind of fruits you might think of (guava, manga, mandarina, papaya, cafe, cacao, coco, cana, etc...). We went there to do some volunteering work in collaboration with Ecotrackers Network (www.ecotrackers.com) based in Quito. Our little participation consisted in helping out the community with the "basura". We cleaned the beach up, helped in collecting the bins of the village, organising the recycling of plastics and organics, as well as participing in some meeting with the locals (en espanol!!) and going to the council chamber of the closest town (still a couple of hours in these rancheras) in order to ask money for the creation of a permanent bin collector. Of course, it wasn´t too hard to adapt to the south american tempo and we had plenty of time for some walks along the ocean and into the jungle.

Tranquille (South american rythme)
